As London prepares for their election on Thursdays, a number of issues are arising. You may wonder what this has to do with dance. Well one of the issues on the ballot this year is the issue of dance.
As more and more shows like Dancing With The Stars air on TV, the country believes that it is no longer the true art that is used to be. Caroline Miller, director of the advocacy group Dance UK, explained that several things led to DanceVote 2010, a campaign designed to put the art of dance in the hands of the Parliament.
Dance is now a school subject at British schools and universities, but people are wondering if this academic subject should remain as dance’s official status continues to change.
Miller also explained that, “Dance is the most popular physical activity for the young after school, and that for girls it is the most popular.”
Some people are arguing that dance is necessary because it is the only form of exercise that some people get after the age of 18.
I agree! A lot of people do not have time to workout during the week, so they get their exercise by hitting the dance floor with their friends. Ladies, this is another reason to try out some new dance moves. It is a great way to stay in shape!
I asked Colorado State University students what they thought of dance and got some great responses.
“I think dancing is a great way to stay in shape and have fun with my girlfriends,” Jen Marzano, a senior business major at CSU said.
“If people are so concerned with keeping obesity down, we need to keep dancing and music a normal activity,” Jake Donovan, a senior at CSU said.
I also asked Colorado University dancer Jamie Boyle what she though of dance. “I think that it is an important part of growing up. From your first dance with your father to your first high school homecoming dance, to your wedding dance, it is a fundamental aspect of many significant parts of your life.”
I think that we need to keep people dancing for many reasons; for fun, exercise, good memories, laughter, love and because it is a innovative way to express yourself!
